A practice that focuses on postures, breathing and meditation. It is the yoga generally taught at the YMCA or Community Centers.

Ashtanga Yoga

A fast-paced series of sequential postures focused on strength, flexibility and building body heat.

Bikram Yoga

A practice that focuses on 26 postures always repeated in the same order in a studio heated to approximately 100 degrees.

Iyengar Yoga

Practitioners hold each pose for a long time to bring attention to body alignment. Props such as straps, blankets, cushions and wooden blocks are used. Sivananda Yoga: Combines postures, breathing, diet, chanting, scriptural study and meditation.

Kripalu Yoga

An introspective practice holding postures to explore and release emotional and spiritual blockages.

Kundalini Yoga

A practice that focuses on awakening the energy at the base of the spine and drawing it upward. Includes postures, chanting, meditation and breathing. Sometimes referred as Tantra Yoga.
